For years, I followed conventional parenting advice with my difficult child. I used time out, praise and encouragement, and talked openly about what rule was broken and what the consequences would be. This was supposed to be what “good moms” did, right? Then why wasn’t it working? Because I had it all backwards and didn’t even know it! I was struggling because the tools I was using backfire with difficult children! No wonder the tantrums and power struggles kept getting worse. What I was doing was like adding gasoline to an already-raging fire!

“I can’t believe how fast I’m seeing a change in my daughter’s behavior and attitude! I was feeling REALLY bad as a mom – sure that I was ruining my daughter, despite how hard I was trying – but most days were just one battle after another. It was getting to the point where – as much as I love her – I just didn’t like her much at all. She plain wore me out.As a single mom of three (ages 21, 15 and 9), with not one, but two intense, difficult children, I was at the end of my rope. My oldest was (still is) an intense, extremely difficult child and I have lingering guilt over the job I did with him. The idea of my daughter becoming a teenager in a few years without a change in behavior and attitude – frankly? – scared the crap out of me!- Suzanne Bird-Harris
Tulsa, OklahomaWhen Karen first told me about The Nurtured Heart Approach, I had no faith that I would be able to do it without changing my whole personality. I’m not a touchy-feely kind of mom and “Nurtured Heart” sounded a little too touchy-feely for me to pull off. Karen assured me I could be me and adapt it to my personality, so I was willing to try.
Not only does it work – it works QUICKLY. And it works with my sons, too! (Proving once again, it’s never too late to turn a kid around.) I found out I’m a good mom who just had some things backward, that’s all. Now I have some truly effective tools in my parenting toolbox. What a difference! Thank you, Karen!
