Judith--

I almost think we have to "own" the fact that, at some point, we are GOING to be like our mothers! At least, I needed to make peace with it! I'll have to read Ruth Reichl's memoir--thx for mentioning it!

Glad you stopped by!

Karen, Even before I started reading your post I was reminded of Ruth Reichl's memoir <a>"Not becoming my mother - and other things she taught me along the way"</a>
Unfortunately I never had the chance to see our daughter grow up, but I'm telling you, the moment we got a puppy, I "heard" my mother's voice. And whether I like it or not, all the comments, complaints, threats as well as endearments she used in regards to our dogs came and keep on coming out of my mouth.

About number 3, accepting that all parents are “perfectly imperfect”, it reminded me of an episode of "Judging Amy", when her ex-husband was trying to get custody of their daughter and at a hearing Amy said that she was aware she isn't perfect, but that's exactly the reason why she's a good mom: she will always learn from her past mistakes and try to always improve.

Erin--

Yes! There's nothing like being a mother to shine a light on our areas of growth AND our areas where we need to grow! So glad you stopped by the blog....

Hugs,

Hey Karen,

Isn't it amazing to look back at our mothers now that we are mothers? And I said something to my son the other day that my mother said reminded her of her mother. (And not in a good way!) I love number 5 above about focusing on the kind of adult I want to raise. I was just talking to my son tonight about what I want for him as he grows up and who I hope he'll be when he grows up--generous, kind, someone who does a good job, etc. What an awesome responsibility we taken on when we have kids!

My mom past away one year ago. Many of my mother's old friends keep telling me her memory will never pass because I am just like her...my posture, my hair, my walk and even the way I talk. Also I know that many of my beliefs came from her and yes, my kids have heard at times what my mom said to me all those many years ago. Most likely if I checked, my kids are probably using some of those same sentences with their kids.
